Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does asphalt take to harden?

Asphalt takes 12 months to fully cure after being set down. We recommend that you give it 3 days before you start driving on it or at the absolute minimum, 24 hours.

Additionally, it's important that no vehicles are left parked on the new asphalt for 2-4 weeks after application or there is a risk it will create a depression and uneven surface.

  • There's a crack in my asphalt. Can you fix it?

Yes, we can seal cracks in existing asphalt or bitumen driveways and roads with ease.

If you notice a crack has occurred in your asphalt, you should have it sealed as soon as possible to prevent grass and weeds growing through or water getting in as these can compromise the stability of your asphalt.

  • How long does asphalt last?

If properly taken care of and maintained, the average residential driveway will last approximately 30 years.

This timeframe will vary for other kinds of asphalt surfaces with factors such as levels of use, type of use and weather conditions.

  • How much does an asphalt driveway cost on the Sunshine Coast?

As a general 2026 guide, we typically allow around $60–$120 per square metre for a standard residential asphalt driveway, with complex sites or heavy-duty applications potentially costing more. The final price depends on the driveway size, site preparation, excavation requirements, access, drainage and the asphalt specification required.

We recommend a site assessment before providing a firm price because two driveways of the same size can require very different preparation. Contact RFD Asphalt for a quote based on your Sunshine Coast property and project requirements.

  • What's the difference between asphalt and bitumen driveways?

Asphalt and bitumen aren't the same driveway surface. Asphalt is a manufactured mixture of aggregate and bitumen binder that we lay and compact to create a smooth, dense surface. A bitumen spray seal uses sprayed bitumen with aggregate applied over it, producing a different finish and construction method.

We offer asphalt paving and bitumen spray seal options. The right choice depends on factors such as your site, traffic, required finish and budget, so we can recommend a suitable surface after assessing the project.

  • Is asphalt or concrete better for a driveway?

Asphalt can be a practical alternative to concrete when you want a cost-effective driveway that can be installed relatively quickly and repaired or resurfaced as it ages. It is particularly well suited to larger driveways and access areas where the cost and downtime associated with the surface matter.

Concrete provides a different appearance and construction method, so the appropriate choice depends on your property, budget and preferred finish. For Sunshine Coast conditions, we build the asphalt surface and base to suit the site rather than treating every driveway the same.

  • How long does it take to lay an asphalt driveway?

The time required to lay an asphalt driveway depends on its size, access and how much excavation and base preparation we need to complete first. Once the base is properly prepared, asphalt itself can be placed and compacted quickly, helping minimise disruption to your property.

Installation time is different from curing time. As noted in our existing FAQ, we recommend waiting three days before driving on newly laid asphalt where possible, with 24 hours as the absolute minimum. We also recommend avoiding leaving vehicles parked on new asphalt for the first 2–4 weeks.

  • Can you lay asphalt over my existing driveway?

We can resurface some existing driveways with a new asphalt overlay, provided the underlying pavement and base remain structurally sound. We first assess the existing surface for cracking, potholes, movement, drainage problems and signs of base failure before deciding whether an overlay is appropriate.

Where the foundation is sound, resurfacing can avoid the disruption and expense of removing the entire driveway. If there is extensive structural failure, however, repairing or rebuilding the affected areas may be necessary before new asphalt is laid.

  • Do you do commercial asphalt driveways and car parks?

Yes. We construct asphalt surfaces for commercial projects across the Sunshine Coast, including driveways, entrances and car parks. We also undertake civil and government work, so our asphalt capabilities extend beyond residential driveway construction.

We plan commercial surfacing around the site's intended use, access and traffic requirements, with preparation and pavement construction matched to the application. Contact RFD Asphalt on 07 5446 7104 to discuss your commercial driveway or car park project.
